This course explores the advanced genetic modification techniques used in plant breeding, with a focus on their potential applications in Cannabis sativa. Students will examine methods for introducing genes into crop species, define genetically modified organisms (GMOs), and differentiate between genetic engineering, cisgenics, and transgenics. The curriculum covers the relationship between tissue culture and genetic modification, the significance of double haploids in plant breeding, and plant transformation. Additionally, students will explore CRISPR-Cas9 genome editing and analyze real-world case studies such as Roundup Ready soybeans, Bt corn, and Golden Rice, gaining a comprehensive understanding of genetic engineering in agriculture and its implications for cannabis research and cultivation.
